In The Gym First Sports Science

Gym looks at basic physical and biological concepts while demonstrating sports techniques used in gymnastics, exercise, and, to a lesser extent, gym games such as basketball and volleyball. Field does the same with a wider variety of sports including track and field, baseball, football, and even tug-of-war. Physics concepts such as friction, gravity, thrust, and tension are briefly explained in both titles. Biological examples of aerobics, balance, and the body's use of oxygen when involved in the various athletic endeavors are also discussed. Full-color photographs, drawings, or diagrams appear on almost every page. These books will have trouble finding an audience. Their appeal to young sports fans will be limited by the brevity of the information and the wide array of athletics that are covered. At best, these offerings could serve as additional purchases for larger collections. Tom S.
