The little white owl's enthusiasm for life is as obvious as the rainbow of colored feathers on the bigger owls. The belief in the magic of stories is catching and continues to the very end of this book. From Booklist Living all alone in a snowy landscape under a starry sky, a little white owl imagines himself as a knight or as a rocket, blasting off to the moon. Those empowering fantasies inspire him to take off one day and fly far over oceans and deserts, until he reaches the tropics and finds a group of big beautiful owls in bright-jewel colors. To the white owl, they seem just like him, but the other birds don't feel kinship and order him to go away. After he tells the snotty birds his magical stories of knights, castles, and dragons with fiery breath, though, they are so smitten that when the white owl goes back to his snowy home, the tropical crew begs to join him. The tropically hued, textured illustrations show the huge-eyed birds' transformation from mean, exclusionary bullies to fans enraptured by the little storyteller's scenarios. Young children will recognize the pain of loneliness, the power of solitude, and the bliss of imaginative play.
