Murphy, the yellow Labrador who needed to watch his weight, is back and this time he's jetting off to an exciting vacation in Paris. Traveling on a four-star "Heavenly Pets" package, Murphy and his owner, Cheryl, visit the Luxuembourg Gardens, tour the Louvre, enjoy a night on the town, and, last but not least, climb the Eiffel Tower. Will Paris ever be the same? Emily Bolam's paint and ink artwork is perfectly calibrated to this loving, through-a-dog's eye view of the City of Lights. With only the sparest of line work, she coaxes all sorts of expressions from Murphy from complete annoyance to magical delight. A cultural experience expressed in a way that will captivate even the youngest reader. Dog lovers, young and old, will be enchanted by Murphy's exploits. Editorial Reviews From School Library Journal Grade 1-3-This contrived picture book follows an American girl and her yellow Labrador retriever to pet-friendly Paris and back. The usual tourist activities are on their agenda, but the story primarily revolves around their extravagant stay at a special four-star hotel that caters to privileged pets and their owners. While Murphy's kid-glove treatment in the lap of luxury is exhaustively documented (his menu includes gourmet poached chicken with root vegetables, made to order and delivered by room service), his outings to the Louvre and Luxembourg Gardens get summed up in a few short sentences. Told from Cheryl's point of view, the narration is light and direct, and Bolam's cheery art is well suited to the tone of the story. This book may charm devoted adult dog lovers and their children. Everybody else, however, will dismiss Cheryl and Murphy's itinerary as unattainable and overindulgent. Consider this out-of-touch children's travelogue a supplemental purchase.-Catherine Threadgill, Charleston County Public Library, SC Copyright å¨ Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc.
