With his best friend, Ettie, he creates an imagined world filled with animals, beginning with an elephant in a red scarf. Then he and Ettie move to the aardvarks, and the kids imagine a meeting between the animals. Double-page spreads alternate between Danny's real world and the imagined one in his notebook, where he eventually draws himself and Ettie chatting with a crowd of other zoo creatures. At the end of the day, the children close the drawing book and head home, their sketched animal friends hovering around them. Heap's colorful acrylic paintings and pencil sketches differentiate between reality and fantasy, but young children will easily recognize that, as in their own games, there's plenty of overlap between the worlds.
