Oxford Machine PoeMS
In 'Machine Poems', machines rattle and bang, whirr and purr, scoot along, clutter and mutter. Machines are everywhere - from the kitchen to outer space. Editorial Reviews From School Library Journal Kindergarten-Grade 4-- As in Noisy Poems and People Poems (both Oxford University, 1990), this team has again collaborated on a collection of humorous verses. Bennett has gathered a dozen, mainly British poems with topics ranging from central heating to UFOs. Leland B. Jacobs's ``The Subway Train'' has been changed here to ``The Underground Train'' for the intended British audience; its acknowledgement is incorrect. This volume, with amusing and bright colored-pencil and crayon illustrations, is suitable for reading aloud to younger children. All of the poems have been previously published, but several of the original sources are out of print. Lee Bennett Hopkins's Click, Rumble, Roar: Poems about Machines (Crowell, 1987) is one of the few other books devoted to the subject. --Andrew W. Review `The square book is packed with energy. The pages burst forth with life; Nick Sharratt's pictures throb with activity...offers the reader an easy, dip-in experience both visual and verbal.' Junior Bookshelf `Cross-cultural, witty and incredibly detailed, the pictures and poems could provide literally hours of reading and conversation.' Good Book Guide
